Research proposal abstract
Femoral neck fractures can be treated operatively with an internal fixation or an endoprosthesis (hemiarthroplasty (HA) or total hip arthroplasty (THA)). The initial operation needs to be the best optional procedure for the patient, taken in to account specific characteristics, to minimize the risk of reoperation or conversion from HA to THA. Conversion from a HA to a THA might be performed in patients with osteoarthritis or in high demanding patients resulting in chondrolysis/wear of the acetabulum and eventually in pain. One of the factors in the choice of HA or THA are the patient characteristics (e.g. age, physical condition, ASA score). In this descriptive register-based study we will determine the incidence of conversions of HA to THA and to investigate the patient’s characteristics who have had conversion of their HA to THA. This data is important, because they can guide better clinical decision making as such patients with high chance of conversion rates may receive THA immediately.
