Research proposal abstract
The incidence of primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures and subsequent periprosthetic femoral fractures (PPFF) have steadily increased since 1954. Reasons include broadened indications for THA, increased lifetime of implants in combination with the ageing population and subsequent increase of osteoarthrosis. Lindahl et al. described an estimated risk of 0.64% for a PPFF within 10 years after the primary procedure. High morbidity and mortality rates are observed in patients with PPFF.
The main goal of this exploratory descriptive registry-based study is to investigate the incidence of stem revision due to PPFF in patients with a primary THA for osteoarthritis. In addition, both patient characteristics and surgical characteristics will be studied as potential risk factors for a stem revision due to PPFF.
