Research proposal abstract
Radiostereometric Analysis (RSA) has been previously used as a surrogate method to predict long-term survivorship of acetabular cups. However there are no studies that have compared early migration of acetabular cups to long-term national registry survivorship reports. The purpose of this study is to determine the optimal acetabular cup migration thresholds within 2-years and investigate whether RSA can be used to predict long-term survivorship earlier than the current 2-year timepoint. We will also
investigate whether RSA-tested acetabular cups have lower revision rates than non-RSA tested designs. Therefore, we are requesting survivorship data of RSA-tested acetabular cups and non-RSA tested acetabular cups. To increase the widespread application of our findings and to study possible differences between countries, the same analyses will be performed on survivorship data requested from the Australian National Joint Registry. The study will be conducted at the Centre for Orthopaedics and
Trauma Research centre at the University of Adelaide as part of an ongoing collaboration with Department of Orthopaedics at Leiden University Medical Centre. The results of our study will allow early assessment of new hip implant designs and reduce the risk of patients receiving poor performing implants in the future.
